If it was up to us, all the best design in the world would be posted within the Parfois Portfolio… But… its not up to us. Stumbling the web we often bump into things worth sharing. The world wide web is so full off great things that will never end up in our portfolio, but which we want the world to see. For this we created our blog. At this moment there 4 of us blogging on a regular basis.Work, studies and social life makes that there are weeks with a lot of posts, and weeks without. But we’ll do our best in bringing you the nicest shit on a acceptable basis.
Parfois, changing the blogosphere one post at a time
Everybody knows photoshop, its a way to digitally modify pictures. This is something that’s very useful and almost impossible to do yourself. But nobody ever died trying. This is an image that has been circulating the web quite some time and nobody really knows who’s image it is. On this¬†flickr¬†page are some more pictures. The origin and the concept behind it are a riddle according to¬†Wired,¬†they assume it was a promotional campaign for Photoshop¬†on the Indonesian market.
Cameron Moll has his own way of changing letters into art. He uses thousands different letters, in all kind of typefaces. First the example is made on the computer, but the final result is done by hand. His last project was the Salt Lake Temple, in roughly a 100 hours he made it. And now he is working on a new project. The Rome based colosseum. Read one to see a sneek preview movie about his new project. And more pictures of the Salt Lake Temple.
A very nice idea to make an easy to transport and modular table. U can change the top in whatever material or shape u like. A fully customizable table with a disposable top. More work of  Nicola from Bern.
Today, Steve Jobs made rumors come true. The last weeks Apple fan websites were busy with all the rumors about the Apple Tablet. And today Steve Jobs finally unveiled the thing everyone was waiting on for years. As there was no way to watch the keynote live, I followed it at Engadgets live blog. At first I was a bit sceptic, no multitask, no revolutionary design, just a blown up iPhone. But after watching the promotional movie at the Apple website, I was sold. And my question to you readers is, how do they do it? 5 minutes before watching the movie I was like “now way i’m going to buy this thing”. And 13 minutes later, if it would all ready be for sale, I would pull out my credit card and buy myself the full option iPad.
This post is not about how great the iPad is (alright it is great and revolutionary and…), its about the presentation techniques Apple uses in their commercial video’s. We are all Apple fan-boys here at Parfois, but our iMacs, Macbook’s, Macbook pro’s and iPhones are to work on. their not just toys, we need them to do our daily work. I’m not the kind of person that buys everything Apple comes with, and during the keynote (not the movie but at Engadget in text and pictures) I was sure this was not a thing I needed. But Apple’s way of promoting it at this movie planted something in my brain that whispers “Buy the iPad Jonas, Buy the iPad…”. Want to experience it for yourself? Click the picture above to watch the movie, but watch out… It is dangerous for you financials. Let me know in the comments if Apple has imprinted the same special thing in your brain, as they did with mine. Read on to see some more iPad pictures.
Draw bots are everywhere these day’s and the generic art scene gains popularity to. I’ve always been a big fan of these things and last year I’ve spend a lot of time researching this phenomena. This research resulted in a series of robots (what else?). In 7 months time I’ve made 6 different robots and installations. Every new robot or installation was an evolution of the previous, with this one at the end of the line. This robot reads simple algorithms loops them and creates patterns by doing so. An algorithm can be, move forward for 2 seconds and rotate 78 degrees, if we loop this we generate a certain pattern. The more difficult the algorithm, the more complex the pattern. This video we made at the Antwerp Astonauts exhibition last month.
After the ready mades of Marcel Duchamps, Fwis releases their readymech’s (a clear link is the middle character in the top line with R. Mutt on his arm). On the readymech site u can download all the unfolded versions of their characters in PDF format and start folding.
A while back I saw a lecture with Theo Jansen. As an engineer/artist he makes organic, moving creatures. He releases his sculptures on the beach where they, driven by air, can walk around freely. They are fitted with ingeniously designed sensores that warn the sculpture when he contacts the water, and let him walk the other way as soon as he does. In the same lecture he speaks about his next step, to let his sculptures live autonomously the beach and he hopes that thew will develop to creatures that can withstand storms by hiding in the dunes. Very inspiring work, more info at strandbeest.com.
What Type Are You? A question that can mean a lot of different things. For seven years a team of 23 researchers have studied human types and linked them to typefaces (fonts). It is commonly know that typefaces reflect the character of the person using them, and that type choice, as well as the words that are typed, is a powerful conveyor of meaning. Pentagram made an online flash application which helps you discover your typeface. At there website they claim your questions are analysed in exceptional detail, which maybe is a bit excessive because there are only 4 questions and each question has 2 possible answers. But it still is a nice thing to do.
Want to find you What Type You Are? Go to the What Type Are You application. Curious which type I am? Click the read more button.
I never thought I’d blog about birds, but here we go.
Andrew Zuckerman, (born in Washington, DC in 1977) is an American photographer. His new project is called bird, it takes a minimalist approach to showcasing the beauty of birds. Bird captures an intense view of the birds every detail from positions and angles that would be difficult to reproduce in a truly wild setting. As you can see, lots of birds.
At the end there’s also a small movie that containts some parts of the making of. Enjoy
