About Parfois

If it was up to us, all the best design in the world would be posted within the Parfois Portfolio. But it's not up to us. Stumbling the web we often bump into things worth sharing. The world wide web is so full off great things that will never end up in our portfolio, but which we want the world to see. For this we created our blog. At this moment there are 4 of us blogging on a regular basis. Work, studies and social life makes that there are weeks with a lot of posts, and weeks without. But we'll do our best in bringing you the nicest shit on a acceptable basis.

Valentina Karga

Hello there, I ll shoot it fast: I am an architect. I m gonna try to contribute more on the architectural side of this blog, even though I like a lot installations, robots, interactive design, animation and graphics and dancing. So, sometimes they might interfere. My opinion about architecture is that it is supposed to be able to change and flow with the time, without being "afraid" of decay and death and not try to be cold and intangible, situated beyond time. Together with architecture, I am interested as well in architectural representation. In my life I move a lot. This year I am based in Rotterdam where I work for 2012 architects. I 'd like to thank Parfois' founders for their kind invitation to become a part of the blog. You can visit my personal blog and portfolio if you 'd like to know more about me.

Redesign the recipe

12.03.11

Apart from recipe design which is what we used to know so far, here comes recipe re-design, which is what you get when you visualize standart recipes in a more creative, graphical way. Why didn’t we do that earlier? GOOD followed this upcoming trend and organized a competition about this topic. Results are in and you can vote for your favorite one here. Click more to see a comic-like udon, an ikea-like pho bo, a data visualization-like lasagna and more. >> Read more

“Sudden market” is a workshop that took place in the Markthalle IX in Berlin the past four days. An international team of 34 students from Prague, Dortmund, Italy, London, France and Japan proposed ideas in the context of the general movement about the development of the Markhalle IX, while designed and built installations usefull for the market. house of trough

20.12.10

I love the clean and minimal japanese style. House of trough is a house for a couple in east Hokkaido, Japan, made by japanese studio jun igarashi architects. Due to  poor neighbourhood conditions (the plot is next to an iron-factory), the house is introversially organized and visual contact with the surroundings is limited. There is a logic of buffer zones that protect the living/dining/kitchen area while spacious quality in the verticall axis balances the lack of horizontal quality.  Found in designboom.

Density Design

15.12.10

In our days databases are growing fast and the visualization of them is becoming an issue. The upcoming discipline of information design (or data visualization) converts boring numbers of very complex phenomena into interesting-to-read graphics. Density Design is a research group in the design department (INDACO) of the Politecnico di Milano, which focuses on the visual representation of complex social, organizational and urban phenomena. Visit their website and flickr page to discover more.

Love letters

17.11.10

Maria Ikonomopoulou is a greek artist based in the Nederlands. She did her latest work it at at the Daglicht Studio in Eindhoven and she experimented with big size graphics. You can visit the exhibition Groot grafiek in Rotterdam. Maria has been working again in the past with embroidery techniques. To find out a little bit more about Maria and her past work, “spaces between us” and “intimate distances”, I recommend you to have a look at the this interview. To me Maria’s work awakes lots of feelings, thoughts about life and love, it is familiar since she uses greek folk techniques, like embroidery and I especially like her sence of aesthetics. >> Read more

Save me

01.11.10

I am always glad to spread projects which introduce a questioning about waste disposal. Moreover I really like this poster that treats plastic bags as sculpted elements that become graphical. Created by by xiao dong li and yang xiao, is one of the shortlisted projects from  the ‘endangered species‘ graphic design competition, organized by designboom in collaboration with tokyo designers week 2010. Found in designboom.

A very nice video from LEGS Media. Based on Iggy Pop’s song, it gives a shaded view on fashion film, while it has won a prize in the relevant Diane Pernet’s festival. LEGS Media is located in New York and creates campaigns using various media including film, video, photography, performance and installations.

Cancer City

14.09.10

Swedish architects Visiondivision has built a very interesting project that is ment to be inhabitated by fishes and not humans. It started with the problem that crayfishes started to emigrate from the specific location to other lakes due to lack of stones, calcite and hiding places. To prevent the emigration and help the crayfishes emigrate back Visiondivision has built a concrete crayfish refugee. While the organic concrete morphology lays on the lake, semi-covered by water and seemly hidden by the vegetation, someone can question what is artificial and what natural.
